For LIteracy class:

We will be talking about what it means to be a global citizen.

Part 1 – Teacher Read-Aloud (John Steinbeck`s novel, Of Mice and Men). Discussion points: Describe what we’ve learned about Lennie so far in the novel. Describe what we’ve learned about George so far in the novel. What makes George a good citizen? Explain.

Word study from today’s reading:

juncture: Willows fresh and green with every spring, carrying in their lower leaf junctures the debris of the winter’s flooding.

skitter: Under the sandy bank under the trees the leaves lie deep and so crisp that a lizard makes a great skittering if he runs among them.

tramps: A path beaten hard by tramps who come wearily down from the highway in the evening to jungle-up near water.

bindle: George unslung his bindle and dropped it gently on the bank.

morosely: George stared morosely at the water.

triumphant: “They run us out of Weed,” he exploded triumphantly.

Reflection journal: What have you learned about George and Lennie? In your opinion, what makes George a good guy?

Part 2 – Write a one paragraph summary about these notable global citizens: Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr., Winston Churchill, Abraham Lincoln, Rosa Parks, Norman Ernest Borlaug, Maurice Ralph Hilleman, Princess Diana, Benazir Bhutto. Which one of these people interests you the most? Explain.

Reminder: Give me the title of your novel for you independent study unit.
